Anticoagulants and omega-3, are there any contraindications?

Good morning, I have just had a venous thrombosis with pulmonary embolism. I am currently on anticoagulant therapy, using Clexane for now and then oral therapy later. I would like to know if I can continue taking Omegor Vitality 1000 and Omegor Antiage (alternating them) and if there are any contraindications?

Dear Sabrina,

The contraindications of omega-3 fatty acids concern people at risk of bleeding because they are taking certain medications or substances, such as anticoagulants or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). These polyunsaturated fatty acids can increase the time needed for blood to clot; for this reason, they may be contraindicated if you are taking drugs that can affect blood clotting, such as Clexane (an antithrombotic).

Please also note that EFSA states that supplemental intake of EPA and DHA up to 5 g per day does not increase the risk of bleeding events. You can find more information at this link.

Therefore, I recommend discussing the concurrent use of omega-3 fatty acids with Clexane with your treating physician, who has a more complete clinical picture.
