I take omega 3 in triglyceride form: can I reduce the dose to less than the 2.5 g recommended by Dr. Sears?

Hello – I take 3 softgels a day before meals of Omegor Vitality 1000 providing 420 mg of EPA and 210 mg of DHA. My question is: to meet the recommended dose by Barry Sears of 2.5 g per day, should I add maybe one more? Because the claim of 124% higher bioavailability of the TG-based product created some confusion for me. Thanks, Alberto C.

Dear Mr. C,

The bioavailability value you mention in your email comes from the study conducted by Dyerberg J. et al. on the 70% better bioavailability of omega-3 in triglyceride form (rTG) compared to ethyl ester form (EE).

Bioavailability of omega-3 in triglyceride TG form compared to ethyl ester EE form

The bioavailability values obtained by the authors refer to the most commonly available omega-3 preparations on the market. When plotting the values in a graph, one can see that formulations containing omega-3 fatty acids in re-esterified triglyceride (rTG) form – which is the form of purified and concentrated oils like Omegor Vitality – have the highest bioavailability, while omega-3 concentrates in ethyl ester (EE) form show the lowest bioavailability.

From this and other studies, it has been demonstrated that omega-3 in triglyceride form have 50 to 70% better bioavailability than those in ethyl ester form. Now, regarding your question, I recommend continuing to take 3 softgels of Omegor Vitality daily, which provide on average 2.1 g of EPA+DHA (based on EPA and DHA values reported on IFOS certificates), but thanks to the 70% better absorption correspond to approximately 3.57 g of EPA+DHA compared to the product recommended by Sears, which is in ethyl ester form.

I remain available for further questions.

Best regards, Dr. Rosaria Ramondino Pharmacist and Pharmaceutical Chemist
