How do you take Omega-3s?

When to take Omega-3? Before or after meals? Morning or evening? How long do Omega-3 take to work?

The most frequent questions our customers ask us are precisely about the perfect timing for taking these precious essential fatty acids.

Here’s some good news right away: there are no strict rules, but some tips can help you optimize their absorption.

Is it better to take Omega-3 on a full or empty stomach?
Preferably full. In general, we recommend taking Omega-3 during meals that contain a good source of fats. This is because:

  • fats help the absorption of Omega-3;
  • you reduce the risk of possible digestive discomforts (which affect only 0.1 to 1% of people who take them);
  • you avoid experiencing a fishy aftertaste, a sensation that may be unpleasant.

When to take Omega-3: morning or evening?
There is no rule. The only case when evening intake, during or after dinner, is recommended is if you are taking Omega-3 as part of supplements designed to control cholesterol, such as Cardiol® Forte

In all other cases, the choice is personal because the effect of Omega-3 (and here we also answer the question “How long do Omega-3 take to work?”) is not immediate but long-term.

What really matters is choosing a time of day that allows you to establish your own routine. Because what makes the difference is continuity: to appreciate the effect, you need to take them regularly for at least 2-3 months — this time frame is indicative and may vary depending on each person's needs and your doctor’s advice.
