Ask the Pharmacist

Which supplement is best for preventing joint problems and maintaining general well-being?

Good morning, I have a few questions. I am a 40-year-old man, blood tests are fine, I don’t eat much fish... 1) what dosage would you recommend for "general health" and for "prevention" of joint problems? 2) what is the actual concentration of your products? In what ratio? One last commercial question: years ago I followed the "zone diet"... why should I choose your products instead of those from Enerzona? Looking forward to your reply. Thank you in advance. Riccardo

Dear Riccardo,

Our product line mostly consists of dietary supplements based on omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA, but each product contains different concentrations and ratios of EPA to DHA depending on the indication and specific formulation. For example, Omegor Vitality 1000 (available in packs of 30, 60 and 90 softgels) contains 1000 mg of fish oil per capsule and provides 535 mg of EPA, 268 mg of DHA, totaling 900 mg of omega-3. The EPA + DHA concentration per capsule is at least 80%, while total omega-3 fatty acids are 90%.

The ratio of EPA to DHA is 2:1. This product, due to its omega-3 content and the specific 2:1 EPA to DHA ratio, is used in the zone diet nutritional regime. Furthermore, to guarantee the declared concentration, purity, and freshness, each batch of Omegor Vitality 1000 is certified with 5 stars by IFOS, the certification program dedicated to fish oil supplements; the certificate of analysis for each batch is available for consultation (searching for our company name UGA Nutraceuticals) on the website: https://certifications.nutrasource.ca/certified-products

The IFOS certification also applies to Omegor Vitality 500, Meaquor, and VitaDHA 1000. The reason why Omegor Vitality represents the best choice among omega-3 fatty acid supplements is not only due to its exceptional purity, freshness, and concentration certified on all batches by IFOS, but also due to the particular molecular form of omega-3 fatty acids that significantly changes their absorption and digestibility characteristics.

Omegor Vitality is made with fish oil purified by multiple molecular distillation and omega-3 in the form of re-esterified triglycerides (rTG), while Enerzona’s product contains fish oil with omega-3 in the form of ethyl esters (EE). The triglyceride (TG) form is the molecular form in which fatty acids are found in food and is therefore the one our body is used to digest and absorb, without any fishy aftertaste. The ethyl ester (EE) form is a molecular structure of fatty acids that does not exist in nature and is therefore poorly digestible because our body is not accustomed to processing it. Moreover, the ethyl component causes an unpleasant fishy aftertaste. Several scientific studies have shown that omega-3 in the form of re-esterified triglycerides (rTG) are absorbed 70% better than omega-3 in the form of ethyl esters (EE).

Omega-3 in triglyceride form, like those in Omegor Vitality 1000, therefore ensure better absorption and utilization of these fatty acids by the body and avoid the unpleasant fishy aftertaste. Regarding the dosage of EPA and DHA useful for general wellbeing, following the European Commission guidelines, 250 mg of EPA+DHA daily (thus 1 capsule per day of Omegor Vitality 1000) is sufficient to maintain normal heart function, while a dosage of 250 mg daily of DHA alone (2 capsules of Omegor Vitality 1000) is necessary to maintain normal brain and visual functions. In case of joint problems, to best exploit the anti-inflammatory potential of omega-3 in a 2:1 ratio, the dosage I recommend is 2-3 capsules per day of Omegor Vitality 1000 taken close to a main meal (breakfast, lunch, or dinner) for at least 2 months.
