From Fishing to Raw Fish Oil
It all starts with tuna, anchovies, sardines, mackerel, and krill that live freely in the sea waters. After being caught, they undergo a quick steaming process that coagulates the proteins and releases liquids (water and oil) from the cells.
Then, the fish are cold-pressed mechanically to collect the raw oil. And this is only the first step of our journey.
Omega-3: Multiple Molecular Distillation
From raw oil to ultra-pure fish oil. This is where the magic happens: Short Path Distillation is a distillation process working at low pressure and temperature, necessary to remove substances that impair the quality of raw fish oil.
The process yields an ultra-pure oil with an Omega-3 concentration of about 60-70%.
To obtain our fish oil, we carefully follow all these steps:
- Deacidification: we remove free fatty acids that cause the oil to become rancid.
- Ethy esterification (also called ethylation) and concentration: a fundamental step to obtain high concentrations of EPA and DHA, the most valuable Omega-3s.
- Advanced molecular distillation: we work under vacuum to separate long-chain fatty acids from short-chain ones, thus obtaining fish oils with different EPA and DHA concentrations.
- Fractionation: we remove saturated fats.
- Urea filtration: we eliminate saturated and monounsaturated fatty acids to increase EPA and DHA concentration.
- Decolorization: we remove colored pigments and other oxidation compounds. If necessary, activated charcoal is used to remove harmful substances such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs).
- Deodorization: the oil is passed through a steam flow to eliminate odor and taste.
- Addition of Vitamin E: we add natural antioxidants as required by law.
After deacidification, there is another fundamental step deserving special attention: ethylation, that is the transformation of Omega-3 fatty acids from triglycerides (TG) to ethyl esters (EE). Only from ethyl esters (fatty acids bound to ethanol molecules) can we obtain oil rich in EPA and DHA, the components directly usable by our body.
“Special” Fish Oil-Based Supplements
