IQ: Omega-3 Boost Intelligence, Especially in Children
Supplementing children's diets with fish oil, rich in Omega-3, could be an effective way to boost their intelligence quotient (IQ). This is demonstrated by a meta-analysis published in Perspectives on Psychological Science. The research team led by John Protzko, a researcher at New York University, found that omega-3 supplementation, attending a quality preschool, and interactive reading with parents help increase children's IQ.
Collecting data from the best studies on children from birth to preschool age, the researchers discovered that omega-3 supplementation results in a 3.5-point increase in IQ.
Iron and Vitamin B1 — Ineffective
Dr. Protzko's team also evaluated the effects of nutritional supplements commonly recommended for pregnant women, new mothers, and their children. The benefits on intelligence quotient from supplements containing iron, ascorbic acid, and vitamin B1 (which supports nervous system functions and is rich in brewer's yeast and legumes) were found to be negligible or nearly so.
Both in the Mother and the Child
The researchers found that supplementing both the diets of pregnant women and follow-up formulas for children with omega-3 EPA and DHA results in a 3.5-point IQ increase. A plausible explanation, according to the researchers, is that the fatty acid contained in omega-3 provides children with essential building blocks their bodies cannot produce on their own, necessary for synthesizing components of nerve cell membranes.
Interactive Reading and Quality Preschools
IQ also increases by about 6 points thanks to the kind of reading parents do that actively engages the child. By attending a stimulating environment, such as a quality preschool, IQ can increase by up to 7 points. The authors' stated goal is to understand the nature of intelligence and to find out if and how it can be nurtured at every stage of human development. This study is only a first step.
