Fish Oil and Vitamin D3 Help Clear Alzheimer’s Plaques
Vitamin D3 and the omega-3 fatty acid DHA support the immune system in clearing Alzheimer’s plaques and reduce brain cell death.
This was reported by a group of scientists in a study published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease.
The Tragedy of Alzheimer’s Disease
Alzheimer’s, the most common form of dementia, is a neurodegenerative disease typically appearing after age 65. It currently affects over 13 million people worldwide.
In Alzheimer’s patients, deposits called plaques—composed of abnormal beta-amyloid protein—accumulate in the brain, attacking cells in the central nervous system and triggering inflammation. This leads to irreversible brain cell damage and death, impairing brain functions. Alzheimer’s causes memory loss and cognitive decline; over time, patients become increasingly dependent on others for basic activities like eating and washing.
Surprising Findings of the New Study
The new study showed that vitamin D3 (produced by sunlight and important for bone health) and omega-3 DHA help the immune system fight the disease. Researchers collected blood samples from two groups: Alzheimer’s patients and healthy controls. They isolated macrophages, immune cells capable of clearing beta-amyloid and other brain and body waste.
When macrophages were incubated overnight with beta-amyloid, and treated with vitamin D3 or an active form of DHA called resolvina D1, the ability of macrophages to remove beta-amyloid improved, and cell death caused by the abnormal protein was inhibited.
Differences in Inflammation Between Groups
Researchers observed two types of immune responses among patients. In the group with higher inflammation, omega-3 and vitamin D3 reduced inflammation. In the other group, the addition of vitamin D3 and resolvina D1 increased inflammation. Therefore, researchers suggest tailoring dosages according to each patient’s immune response type.
