The effective anti-wrinkle and anti-aging action of Omega-3
Omega-3 Supplements: Not Only Anti-Inflammatory but Also Anti-Aging!
Omega-3 help to counteract skin aging, delay the appearance of wrinkles, and maintain smoother and younger-looking skin. A study by Hyeon Ho Kim and colleagues from the College of Medicine at the National University of Seoul (South Korea) revealed the potential of these fatty acids to mask the signs left on the skin by the passage of time. The results were published in the Journal of Lipid Research.
UV Rays (Ultraviolet Rays) and Skin Damage
The researchers demonstrated that Omega-3 protect against damage caused by exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UV) contained in sunlight. UV rays (ultraviolet rays) are the component of solar radiation responsible for tanning: during sun exposure they stimulate the production of melanin, a pigment synthesized by the skin that helps protect against the potentially harmful effects of tanning. However, it is the ultraviolet rays themselves that cause such skin damage. In particular:
- they cause sunburn, burns, and DNA damage;
- they impair the health of the dermis associated with the skin,
- they promote the formation of wrinkles and skin aging.
Specifically, in dermal cells irradiated with UV, there is an increase in the expression of metalloproteinase-1 (MMP-1), an enzyme that promotes wrinkle formation by destroying some components of the dermis.
Fatty Acids, Friends of the Skin
The authors of the study published in the Journal of Lipid Research analyzed the protective effect of Omega-3 against UV-induced damage. These fatty acids, well-known for their benefits on the cardiovascular system and the nervous system, are also valuable friends of the skin. Omega-3 are effective anti-inflammatories: for example, they reduce redness and inflammation associated with pimples. These nutrients also improve skin hydration and reduce sebum production. The Korean researchers demonstrated that eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), a dietary Omega-3, specifically inhibits UV-induced activation of MMP-1. Based on the analyses conducted, scientists concluded that this phenomenon is associated with the regulation of key molecules whose activity is altered by ultraviolet exposure.
Anti-Wrinkle Action of Omega-3
The results show that Omega-3 can counteract the type of skin aging that leads to wrinkle formation. For this reason, the authors concluded that eicosapentaenoic acid could represent a good preventive remedy against the signs of aging on the facial skin.
