ADHD: Which Product for an 11 Year Old?
Dear Luigi,
My advice is to evaluate, together with the doctor who is following the boy, the supplementation with DHA-based supplements. Often, in fact, children affected by attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) show a deficiency of omega-3 DHA in the blood, and according to some recent studies, treatment with this fatty acid can improve the typical symptoms of ADHD. In any case, I recommend not to consider dietary supplements as a therapy, but only as a nutritional support. The most suitable product in this case is VitaDHA liquid in single-dose sachets, a supplement rich in very high quality fish oil. Each sachet contains 1800 milligrams total of omega-3, of which:
- 1250 mg of DHA
- 360 mg of EPA
VitaDHA liquid has a neutral and pleasant taste so it can be easily consumed directly or added to drinks, yogurt, smoothies, juices, and fresh fruit juices, etc. The mechanism by which omega-3 can improve symptoms in hyperactive children and those with concentration disorders is not yet fully understood, but it is thought they may act directly on brain cells. Omega-3s are indeed present in the membranes of neurons, in particular DHA is a fundamental component of these cell membranes, and plays a key role in nerve signal transmission. Numerous scientific evidences suggest that omega-3 DHA contributes to the maintenance of normal brain and visual functions with a daily intake of 250 mg.
