Ask the Pharmacist

Autism, which omega-3 is best for my children?

Hello. Given that I have 2 children aged 6 and 8 years, and the 6-year-old is affected by the autism spectrum, I wanted to ask if the product I ordered, "Omegor Kids syrup," is suitable for both or if it is advisable, due to the higher DHA dosage, to take "VitaDHA liquid." Can you confirm that storing the products in the fridge does not reduce their quality and actually improves their organoleptic properties? Thank you

Dear Marco,

Autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and childhood autism may benefit from omega-3 supplementation. I start by telling you that Omegor Kids syrup can certainly be suitable for your 8-year-old child. Omegor Kids syrup provides 200 mg of DHA per single-dose vial:

  • this dosage is indicated to supplement the normal diet of developing children
  • and is particularly useful during the school period

For your 6-year-old child, a higher DHA dosage may be appropriate, such as that found in the product VitaDHA. VitaDHA is also in single-dose vials and contains a particularly pure fish oil that is also pleasant to taste because it is flavored with lemon essential oil.

People affected by autism or learning disabilities often have an Omega‐3 deficiency

The reason why supplementation with higher DHA dosages is recommended is due to the evidence that individuals affected by autism and autism spectrum disorders (ASD) often have an Omega‐3 deficiency at the cellular membrane level.

  • Thus, reintroducing these nutrients through diet could potentially lead to a reduction in aggressive behavior.

VitaDHA can be taken by your younger child at a dosage of 1 vial per day. The product can be taken as is or mixed with cold or warm foods or drinks – yogurt, soft cheeses, milk, fruit juice, etc. The taste is also pleasant. Naturally, it is advisable that this dietary supplementation is discussed and approved by the pediatrician or specialist before starting.

Products can be stored in the fridge

I confirm that refrigeration can be recommended both for Omegor Kids and VitaDHA – especially during the summer period, to improve taste. I again recommend that any supplementation with VitaDHA be followed in agreement with the specialist doctor, so that they can verify and measure progress over time, also establishing, based on these assessments, the duration of supplementation. I remain available for further questions or clarifications.
