Ask the Pharmacist

Chemotherapy, can omega 3 help?

Can Omega-3 be of any help for people undergoing chemotherapy? If yes, what is the most suitable formulation and the recommended daily dosage? Thank you and good work. Ambrogio

Dear Ambrogio,

The use of omega‐3 fatty acids in cancer patients is evaluated:

  • to improve the nutritional status and function of patients
  • to reduce the toxicity of chemotherapy and other conventional therapies
  • to increase their response rate.

Below I report some articles from our blog citing several studies about the effects of omega‐3 EPA and DHA supplementation in chemotherapy patients:

Supplementation with Omega‐3 fatty acids fits into a new concept of therapeutic strategy, combining chemotherapy and traditional therapies with nutritional supplementation with nutrients that could potentially improve treatment response and reduce the psychological and physical discomfort of patients undergoing chemotherapy. The use of Omega‐3 fatty acids in combination with anticancer therapies can provide the following benefits to chemotherapy patients:

  • the anti-inflammatory effect of these fatty acids, a precious help given the important role inflammation plays in tumor metabolism and in drug resistance;
  • the ability to reverse cancer cachexia, improve muscle mass and lean body mass, and support weight maintenance – frequent issues during chemotherapy.

Omegor Vitality 1000

The product I recommend is Omegor Vitality 1000 – available in packs of 30 or 45 softgel capsules. The dosage is 1–2 capsules per day to be taken close to a main meal – breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Omegor Vitality 1000 is made from purified and concentrated fish oil in omega‐3 providing per capsule 420 mg of EPA and 210 mg of DHA. Omegor Vitality holds the prestigious IFOS quality certification – a guarantee of excellent product quality, freshness, and absence of contaminants such as heavy metals, dioxins, furans, and PCBs.

Every production batch undergoes analysis at an independent Canadian laboratory specializing in fish oils, and the product analyses can be viewed on the IFOS website under the “Consumer reports” section by searching for the name of our company U.G.A. Here you can find the IFOS certificate for a recent batch of Omegor Vitality 1000. I remain available for further information.
