What are the effects of fish oil on the platelet aggregation process?
Does the use of fish oil (Omega-3) affect platelet aggregation, since paroxetine also has this effect? Specifically, does it inhibit serotonin uptake by platelets in the bloodstream?
Dear Carlo,
Omega-3 fatty acids have antiplatelet aggregation and blood-thinning effects.
Clinical research shows that at recommended doses, there is no significant increase in bleeding risk. Serotonin (5-HT) is an important neurotransmitter in the central nervous system and also plays a role in biological processes like hemostasis.
Platelets do not produce serotonin: they uptake it from surrounding cells and later release it to promote aggregation. SSRIs can inhibit serotonin uptake and accumulation in platelets, which may predispose patients to bleeding risk.
Several studies have been conducted on bleeding risk in patients on SSRIs. These have shown a higher incidence in individuals with a history of gastrointestinal bleeding or those taking SSRIs together with aspirin or other NSAIDs.
Age is also a risk factor: the highest number of cases has been recorded in patients over 80 years old. You can consult some of these studies through the links below:

This response is intended to give you additional context, but I strongly recommend discussing with your physician before starting Omega-3 supplementation alongside other medications.
