Is the fish oil used in Omegor Vitality extracted from farmed or wild fish?
Dear Dr. Z,
Omegor Vitality, like all our fish oil supplements, is produced using oils extracted from wild-caught fish, not farmed fish. Specifically, the oil comes from anchovies and sardines (as also specified on the packaging under allergens).
We use oil from these small pelagic fish because they are richer in omega-3 fatty acids and, since they do not occupy the top positions in the food chain, they are less exposed to pollution. Wild fish feed on zooplankton and algae, which are sources of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), an essential omega-3 fatty acid for animals, from which long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids EPA and DHA are synthesized through a series of elongation and desaturation reactions.
Farmed fish provide fish oil with lower omega-3 content because their diet is low in algae and richer in other fish and feed, so their omega-3 content varies greatly depending on the omega-3 content of the added feed. Additionally, xenobiotics such as hormones or antibiotics are often used in farming tanks, making farmed fish and their derivatives less pure than wild fish. Below is a table showing the typical omega-3 fatty acid levels in commercially available oils (excerpted from “Long-chain Omega-3 Specialty Oils” by Harald Breivik, published by Oily Press Ltd.).
| Type of Fish | Concentration (% of total fat) | |||
| EPA | DPA | DHA | Total | |
| Anchovies | 22 | 2 | 9 | 33 |
| Sardines | 16 | 2 | 9 | 27 |
| Farmed Salmon | 7 | 3 | 11 | 21 |
Thank you for your observation; we appreciate your suggestion and will immediately add this information to our website and subsequently on the packaging. Please feel free to contact us again for further information.
Best regards,
Dr. Rosaria Ramondino Pharmacist and Pharmaceutical Chemist
