Ask the Pharmacist

Sintrom and cholesterol, can I take omega-3?

Can Cardiol and Sintrom be taken simultaneously? Here are my values: Total cholesterol 240, LDL 180, HDL 48, triglycerides 120. Thank you.

Dear Gaetano,

Unfortunately, the combination of Cardiol and Sintrom is problematic.

  • Sintrom is a drug based on coumarin derivatives with an antithrombotic effect. Treatment with these drugs requires particular attention in terms of dosage and interactions with other medications and with herbal or botanical dietary supplements.

Based on the above, we advise against combining Cardiol with Sintrom therapy, as Cardiol contains in its formulation:

  • both omega‐3 fatty acids, which may have a long-term anticoagulant effect and are contraindicated during antithrombotic therapy;
  • and various plant extracts that could alter the action of Sintrom.

Therefore, in your case we advise against taking any omega-3 supplement. An alternative we could recommend is the product Eulipid:

  • Eulipid is a dietary supplement that does not contain omega-3 fatty acids in its formulation;
  • it supports normal cardiovascular function by leveraging the beneficial effect of Berberis aristata extract, rich in berberine;
  • the recommended dosage is one tablet of Eulipid per day, to be taken in the evening with or near dinner.

We recommend consulting your doctor about all dietary measures (diet, supplements) you intend to adopt, as well as discussing the possibility of using our products. Your doctor knows the medications you take and possible interactions with ingredients contained in dietary supplements and can therefore indicate the most appropriate therapeutic approach for you. I remain available for further information.
