Ask the Pharmacist

I suffer from endometriosis, which supplement should I choose?

Hello, I suffer from chronic intestinal Endometriosis stage 4, I would like advice on Omega-3. Thank you

Dear Emanuela,

As you surely already know, nutrition plays an important role in managing endometriosis – especially to reduce the painful symptoms associated with the condition. In this context, dietary supplementation with omega-3 fatty acids is relevant.

Omega-3s can exert an adjunct anti-inflammatory effect and generally can act on pro-inflammatory physiological mechanisms. In a condition like endometriosis, which has a significant inflammatory component, omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) from fish oil could help support pharmacological therapies by:

  • reducing the inflammatory response;
  • modulating the production of inflammation mediators – by replacing arachidonic acid (AA) in cell membranes, which is a precursor of pro-inflammatory mediators.

Regular consumption of fish and omega-3 EPA and DHA fatty acids can therefore be a valid complementary treatment in endometriosis, both to alleviate inflammation and progressively reduce the use of anti-inflammatory drugs that are generally employed. The product I recommend you try is Omegor TwinEFA. It has a synergistic formulation of omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA in the form of natural triglycerides and omega-6 GLA from borage oil, a combination that has shown to exert a marked anti-inflammatory action. I suggest taking 2-3 softgels per day close to a meal for at least 2 months – the time needed to experience the efficacy of dietary supplementation.

In any case, I recommend consulting your doctor to evaluate with them the appropriateness, dosage, and duration of supplementation with Omegor TwinEFA – especially considering the ongoing pharmacological therapies for endometriosis. Other dietary recommendations I suggest are limiting the consumption of meat, ham, and cured meats, and instead increasing the intake of vegetables, fresh fruit, and fish for their omega-3 content. Please feel free to contact us again; I remain available for further questions.
