Thyroid and Hypothyroidism: Does Fish Oil Contain Iodine?

Hello, I wanted to know if fish oil contains iodine. I am hypothyroid and cannot take iodine. Thank you. Martina

Dear Martina,

Here is my advice regarding the thyroid. Most of the iodine present in marine organisms is in the form of iodide

  • but iodide is not soluble in oil – and therefore is effectively removed during the purification phases of fish oil.

Consequently, the amount of iodine contained in Omegor products is negligible: the analyses performed on the oil used in Omegor Vitality show an iodine content of only 0.5 µg/g – 1.3 µg/g per gram of oil – in one capsule of Omegor Vitality there is less iodine than in a small pot of yogurt! Indeed, since one capsule of Omegor Vitality 1000 contains exactly 1 g of oil, this will be the maximum iodine quantity present in one capsule.

I remain at your disposal for any further information.
