Ask the Pharmacist

What supplement and what dose of omega 3 can be given to a 7-year-old who has trouble paying attention?

Dear Madam,

The most suitable product for your child is VitaDHA as it provides the highest amount of docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). DHA promotes neuron differentiation by stimulating the production of growth factors (e.g., NGF) responsible for forming new synapses (neuronal plasticity), one of the main mechanisms underlying learning and memory. DHA is also a fundamental building block of the nervous system as it is a component of the myelin sheath: the electrical insulator of neuronal extensions, crucial for proper nerve impulse transmission.

EPA helps modulate the production of inflammatory prostaglandins that seem to be involved in anxiety and depression, conditions often accompanying and worsening attention deficit. Some scientific studies suggest this difficulty may result from dysfunction in nerve pathways responsible for generating the sensation of reward (positive reinforcement), which are regulated by dopamine. The recommended dose is 1 sachet of VitaDHA per day, to be taken as is or diluted in cold foods/drinks (such as yogurt—particularly citrus or fruit-flavored—fermented milk, juices, purees, or fruit compotes, etc.).

To improve oil intake, it is advised to store the supplement in the refrigerator or freezer, as freezing eliminates any residual aftertaste and oily texture. A minimum supplementation period of 2-3 months is recommended, which can be extended depending on individual needs and requirements. I hope this has been helpful, and I invite you to contact us again for any further clarifications or useful information.
