Which supplement to improve school skills?
My son is in first grade and has a hard time concentrating and learning. What supplement would you recommend? Could omega-3s be helpful?
Dear Stefania,
I recommend Omegor Mind for your son, a supplement based on omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA and a clinically tested, standardized extract of Bacopa Monnieri, combined with omega-6 GLA, zinc, and B vitamins.
A clinical study, summarized on our official page at this link, showed the effectiveness of Bacomind® in a group of children aged 4 to 18: it significantly improved working memory, logical memory, and verbal memory. Improvements were also observed in personal life memory, visual memory, and auditory memory. Moreover, a deficiency in omega-3 fatty acids may be associated with reduced brain dopamine levels, a neurotransmitter involved in memory and attention mechanisms, which can manifest as a decrease in general learning. The recommended dose is 2 capsules daily before a main meal.
If your child has difficulty swallowing capsules, I suggest a liquid product, VitaDHA liquid, a highly concentrated DHA supplement. One sachet of VitaDHA liquid per day provides 1450 mg of DHA and 330 mg of EPA.
This is a much higher amount of DHA than in Omegor Mind, which is balanced by the presence of Bacomind. I recommend taking one sachet of VitaDHA liquid every other day, which can be taken as is before a main meal or mixed with cold foods such as yogurt or spreadable cheese. Most of the long-chain omega-3 fatty acids in our body are located in the brain, particularly DHA, the main component of cell membranes in the nervous system.
Many scientific studies highlight that DHA deficiency in children may be linked to reduced attention and learning ability. As mentioned, low omega-3 fatty acid levels can also be associated with reduced brain neurotransmitters like dopamine. Therefore, I suggest discussing with your trusted pediatrician to decide the most appropriate choice, considering whether your son should take a solid or liquid form.
Best regards,
Beatrice Iozzino, Pharmacist
